Abstract

To the people of a particular time and place, memories are ascribed to the social environment, specifically to social frameworks. To remember involves establishing common reference points, and their link with a collective framework. Because of the latter, social memories have a strong secondment to space, both physical and symbolic because they permit links between the past and what it means and landmarks or places of the memory. This is why social subjects build an identity structure based on the social use given to the territory as a result of the particular relationships with the land, which generates practices that consolidate the social use of the territory. In this system of relationships with the territory, societies have managed to establish territorial marks and disputes over the land and territory. This paper aims to analyze the conceptual overlap between memory and territory, and how this relationship allowed the construction of social usage mechanisms of the territory, based on practices and tactics of specific peasant societies, in this case, afro-Colombian groups and indigenous communities in Colombia.
